Quinn and I took our first trip on the plane to see my family up north. I had a hard time with deciding how I was going to manage taking a 3 month old by myself through security and on the plane.  After combining what works well for Quinn with other experienced moms' advice, this is what I came up with...
(*Disclaimer-I realize that every baby is different. This is just what worked well for us. I must add that although the trip went well overall, Quinn DID cry and people DID stare at us. I mean, I was travelling with a little baby, so what can one expect, right?!  So, my hope is that this post might be helpful for the first time mom, like me, with getting ideas on how to make travelling go as smoothly as possible.  There are no guarantees here ;)

Untitled #2

1. Nuk Soft Pack of 8 Soft OrthoStar Pacifier, Pink/Purple,...-I realize different babies prefer different pacis and some don't prefer them at all.  BUT, Quinn really seems to like the Nuk brand and they stay in pretty well.  These were a must for keeping her happy, especially for take off and landing to help her ears adjust.  She was asleep for both (thanks to the white noise from the plane), but I still made sure she was sucking on the paci.
2. Wet Ones and Hand Sanitizer-Always good to have on hand when going pretty much anywhere.
3. Ergo Baby Carrier Black with Camel Lining-I like this carrier because it prevents my back from getting too sore and it has a nice covering that you can put over top of your baby if they fall asleep or are outside in the sun (perfect for a Florida baby!).  There are some cons though.  It is a little bulky (the Bjorn seems more compact) and the baby can't face out.  I used the Ergo for getting on and off the plane.  It was nice to have two hands for checking the stroller and car seat at the gate.
4. BabyJJ Cole Collections Stroller - These clips have really come in handy.  They hold the diaper bag so that you can access it easily, which allows for extra space under the stroller.
5. Gap petite straight leg jeans-I am in love with these jeans.  They are light and stretchy, and you can dress them up or down.

6. Gap dolman sleeve top-This shirt is loose and airy.  I wore it with a nursing tank underneath.  The combo made it easy to nurse in public.
7. L'ovedbaby 4-in-1 Nursing Shawl-This shawl is a little fancier than the DIY one I made, but either would work well for covering up your back.  Even with the shawl, Quinn still took her sweet time and played around a lot while nursing.  But, at least I didn't have to worry about staying covered up!
8. Luvs Ultra Leakguards-So far, I have a good experience with these preventing major leaks.  They worked well for travelling, but I do prefer to use Pampers most of the time.  They seem a lot softer on Q's skin (and, they smell sooo good!).
9. Granola Bars-Don't forget to eat something!  I packed some granola bars and ate them before I had to hold Quinn in my lap on the plane.
10. Graco SnugRider Elite-This stroller has been a lifesaver! The car seat snaps in and you can literally fold it up with just one hand. I tucked the Ergo underneath so if Quinn would start to fuss, I could just slip it on. I did not take the car seat base with me since I was only staying for a long weekend.  I found a youtube video that was helpful in showing me how to install the car seat without the base and it wasn't too difficult.

One more thing...don't forget your baby's birth certificate! :)

What have you done or used that works well for travelling?  I know this will all change as Quinn gets older, so I would appreciate any ideas!

five fact friday

Friday, April 26, 2013

So many fun pictures to choose from this week!  Where to begin?!  I narrowed it down to these five to sum up my week.
1.  Quinn spent a lot of quality time with her Kent cousins this past weekend.  Natalie and Stratton were so sweet and helpful with Quinn.  We  were on the go a lot, and when she would start crying in the car they would pop her paci back in her mouth and entertain her...totally unprompted!  I was tempted to take them home with me ;)
2.  Quinn met Grandma DeHaan for the first time (after alarming all the nurses in the senior living home with her loud wail to announce she was hungry and tired...they all came rushing into the hallway! :/ hehe...)
3.  We visited my good friend Mary and her three little girls.  (Mary was my Young Life leader in high school)  It was so fun to see their farmhouse that they are renovating.  Love this family!
4.  The weekend was full of surprises as you can see!  It was fun to surprise my Dad on Friday night.  He had no idea I was coming with Q.  The fun continued when there was a big truck for him out in the driveway with SNOW and balloons blowing everywhere!
 5.  Quinn and I made it home just in time for a mold inspection.  Ohhh Florida.

three months

Little Quinn turned 3 months last week!  It's really true that each stage just gets better than the last.  Here is a recap of the past month in pictures!
Quinn is starting to develop her own little personality and it's really fun to watch.  Here are some things we have noticed about our little girl...
  • She seems to be somewhat of a picky eater.  She will only eat when she is really hungry and she likes to take her time.  She will often stop to stare at me during feedings :)
  • Q loves it when we sing to her.  I have a terrible voice but she doesn't seem to mind.  She will always give me a smile when I sing.
  • This girl does not mess around with a fake cry.  If she is upset, she lets us know with a big, loud wail.  Luckily, she is pretty consolable.
  • Quinn loves to sleep swaddled up in her crib.  She usually sleeps best there.
  • She loves to be held facing out now.  Daddy is pretty sad that she no longer likes to be held over the shoulder.
  • Q is crushing the thrush! Woohoo!  FINALLY.  We are no longer treating it with meds, but my mom found a home remedy on the internet.  We gave her a little bit of baby yogurt (less than a teaspoon), and it has really helped with treating the thrush on her tongue.  We are praying that her lil' body will be able to completely fight it off.
We have been so blessed by Quinn.  It has been a fun month.  We are excited to see what this next month has in store for us!

modern nursing shawl

Monday, April 22, 2013

I have to give my sister 100% credit for giving me the inspiration to make this shawl. She made one and used it on the plane when she came down to visit with Oliver a few months ago. It's perfect because it is long, lightweight, covers up your back, and is dark so that the baby won't get distracted/can sleep.
I found a tutorial on pinterest to give me step by step instructions.  The tutorial says that this project is "soooo easy."  Well, I guess it is since you really only need to sew one straight line (I am an amateur sewer, so perfect for me!)  However, I often see things from a middle schooler's perspective (since I used to teach them), and I thought the initial set up directions were confusing.  I couldn't help but make this visual for anyone who might get a little mixed up like me :)

Materials:  1 yard knit fabric (make sure the fabric is folded), thread to match, scissors, pins, measuring tape
Easy....right?  Well, then this happened!  How in the world did I mess this up?  Quick phone call to my sister, and....
Solution!  Cut the excess fabric in the neck hole to make a "boat neck."
I hope these little tips were helpful!  I always get frustrated when people say how easy something is and then I manage to make it more difficult.  Maybe this post will help you from running into the same challenges I had with the project.  I would definitely recommend trying it!

4-I get to see my family this week!!  My dad is turning the big 6-0!
5-Quinn just turned 3 months old.  I feel like we are officially out of the newborn stage...bittersweet.

HE knows my name

"The sheep hear his voice; and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out."--John 10:3

I was blessed with growing up in a Christian home with loving parents.  When you are surrounded by Christian values your whole life sometimes the gospel gets a little grey...I often struggled with finding the verses in the Bible meaningful and allowing them to penetrate my soul.

Now that I am a wife and mother, I find myself hanging onto every word of this verse.

Since college, I have started to lean into God a lot more.  I think God gets us out of our comfort zone sometimes so that we will depend on Him.  It's scary at first, but He is always faithful.

As a new mom, sometimes I just want to be the baby!  haha  I just want someone to scoop me up in their arms, tell me exactly what to do, and just hold me.  So, today, as I read this verse I am reassured that I have a Father in heaven who loves me and knows my name.  I am so thankful for this, especially with everything going on in the news.  I find peace in knowing "the God of angel armies is always by my side."  I have had that Chris Tomlin song in my head all week.  :)

SUGAR COOKIES WITH VANILLA BUTTERCREAM FROSTING

It's been a while since I have done some baking but it feels good to be at it again!  For some reason I always end up baking when Matt is away.  It's a fun and rewarding project that I find comforting.  Here are some "welcome home" cookies that I made for him.  Quinn "helped" by sleeping so I could bake :)

For the dough: I used Betty Crocker's Sugar Cookie mix.  Easy peasy.
For the frosting: I usually make frosting from scratch.  It doesn't require a lot of ingredients and you can definitely taste the difference.  I don't mess around when it comes to frosting!
I  found the recipe on Pinterest.

1/2 stick of butter softened (make sure it is really soft!)
3 cups powdered sugar
1/4 cup whole milk (I used half & half with a little water)
3/4 tsp vanilla

In your mixer bowl, cream the butter. Add 1/2 of the powder sugar, mix well. Add the rest of the powdered sugar, mix well. Add the milk and vanilla. Mix until smooth and creamy. Stick the frosting in the fridge for 20 to 30 minutes to firm up a bit before using.

PEANUT BUTTER RICE KRISPIES WITH M&M'S

A few weeks ago, my good friend Deb and her son Wesley visited.  I hadn't seen Wes since he was 2 weeks old!  We had a good time playing with the babies and doing a little baking. This is a very EASY, QUICK, and DELICIOUS recipe...perfect if you have little ones around!

I found the recipe off of Mix and Match Mama's blog.

Ingredients: 1 cup sugar, 1 cup light corn syrup, 1 cup creamy peanut butter, 6 cups Rice Krispies cereal
Directions: In a small saucepan over medium-high heat, bring sugar and corn syrup up to a boil, stirring continuously. Once to a low boil, remove from heat and stir in peanut butter. Pour peanut butter mixture over 6 cups of cereal in a large mixing bowl. Combine quickly until cereal is covered and then spread out into a well greased (I use Pam) 8x8 inch baking dish. Cool at least 10 minutes before cutting into squares.

*We added easter colored M&M's.  I would highly reccomend it if you are a chocolate lover!
Looks like somebody has a lil' crush!  Good luck, Wes...Quinny is already playing "hard to get!"

1.  I have a hair appointment this weekend.  Horray!  I look forward to hair appointments for weeks!  I thought I would show off Q's hair instead of mine in this pic ;)

2. Matt returned from Lake Tahoe this week.  He was on a ski trip with his work.  The trip was too big of a haul for Q and I to tag along, so he went solo.  Two flights and one long car ride, with a little baby?  No thanks!  Glad he is back after four whole days of just me and Q!

3.  Since both of our hubbies were away, my friend Amy and I decided to have a girls night with our babies. We had ourselves a little sleepover! One of the highlights...chowing down on some lactation cookies that Amy made! :) Thanks for having us over Amy and Baby Eden!!

4.  I have been doing Jillian Michael's 30 day shred workout. So far, so good. It's tough, but the workouts are only 20 minutes, so I have managed to get through them. Perfect nap time activity.

5. Quinn has started to be able to grasp little objects! It's really cute to watch her focus so hard on grabbing the little toys that hang above her on the play mat.

Spring

Monday, April 8, 2013

Springtime up north was always a hoax.  Everyone gets their hopes up once March hits and then a big snow storm reminds everybody that warm weather is actually NOT just right around the corner.  In Florida, spring is REAL!  The temperature starts to get considerably warmer and everything turns green again!  So, in honor of springtime, I made a big 'ol batch of iced coffee!
I'm a bit of an iced coffee snob.  I like it with lots of ice and extra bold, just like they make it at Starbucks.  Sometimes I will settle for just chilling strong left over coffee in the fridge, but this stuff tastes way better.  All my thanks to Pioneer Woman!  I found her iced coffee recipe a little over a year ago and have not looked back yet :)
I went on my third running attempt this weekend.  It was so nice out and since Matt was home I was able to get out on Saturday morning while Quinn was napping.  I only lasted about 20 minutes (ok..more like 15 minutes).  My endurance is terrible.  But, I didn't wet my pants this time!  I used to think moms were exaggerating when they talked about not being able to hold it after having kids.  Well, it's no joke. ;)
We went to the mall on Saturday and this time I used the Ergo (thanks for the advice, sister!)  Quinn did fabulous and we got a lot of shopping done, which Matt desperately needed.  We also bought Quinn her first swimsuit.  I have been eyeing one in particular from BabyGap for about a month, and when I showed Matt he said, "I don't even care how much it is.  It's so cute.  We are getting it!"  My jaw totally dropped.  My husband...didn't care about the price of something!!!  What?!!  He is such a sucker for cute baby clothes and I couldn't be happier!

Hope you are enjoying spring (or the lack thereof) wherever you are!

FIVE FACT FRIDAY

Friday, April 5, 2013

1.  I was on vacation this week.  At least it felt like it!  I spent most of my week hanging out with the McCauleys at the lakehouse they were renting.  Not a bad view!
2.  Time warp.  Did I mention the lakehouse has been around for a while?  It was actually really cool and had a lot of charm.  It was perfect for hanging out with all of these lovely people :)
3.  Playdate with Kacey and June.  Loved spending some time with these sweet girls!
 4.  I can't wait to wear this dress in May!  I finally tried on my dress for Kelsey's (Matt's sister)wedding.  It's currently getting altered but I can't wait to wear it.  It's so pretty.
5.  It's so nice to have family around!  Kelsey and Topher spent some quality time with Quinn.  She showed her affection with lots of smiles :)  Also, Matt and I were able to go out on a couple of dates this week with Grandma Polly around!

Happy Easter!

Monday, April 1, 2013

We had a great Easter with Quinn and the McCauley family.  It was so fun to get Q dolled up in her bright pink dress!  She was full of smiles :)
 Q's First Easter Basket

I have to admit, it is SO fun to get into the festivities of Easter with a baby...but it can easily detract from the real reason we celebrate Easter...Christ's resurrection.  I feel like I am constantly pulling back from the materialism in our culture.  It can be exhausting.  Sometimes I just wish I lived on a farm without all of the distractions!  It takes a lot of discipline to not get caught up in it all.  My desire is to help Quinn grow to find joy in the real reason we celebrate Easter and not just in an Easter basket.  I realize the only way to truely do this is by the example I set for her...which might mean by laying off some of the pastel colored M&M's haha...but seriously, why does chocolate seem to taste better in pastels?!

Hope you found joy in the real reason we celebrate Easter this weekend :)
