modern nursing shawl

I have to give my sister 100% credit for giving me the inspiration to make this shawl. She made one and used it on the plane when she came down to visit with Oliver a few months ago. It's perfect because it is long, lightweight, covers up your back, and is dark so that the baby won't get distracted/can sleep.
I found a tutorial on pinterest to give me step by step instructions.  The tutorial says that this project is "soooo easy."  Well, I guess it is since you really only need to sew one straight line (I am an amateur sewer, so perfect for me!)  However, I often see things from a middle schooler's perspective (since I used to teach them), and I thought the initial set up directions were confusing.  I couldn't help but make this visual for anyone who might get a little mixed up like me :)

Materials:  1 yard knit fabric (make sure the fabric is folded), thread to match, scissors, pins, measuring tape
Easy....right?  Well, then this happened!  How in the world did I mess this up?  Quick phone call to my sister, and....
Solution!  Cut the excess fabric in the neck hole to make a "boat neck."
I hope these little tips were helpful!  I always get frustrated when people say how easy something is and then I manage to make it more difficult.  Maybe this post will help you from running into the same challenges I had with the project.  I would definitely recommend trying it!

  1. Thank you!!! I went to the same tutorial you posted a link to and was very confused and spent 30 minutes reading comments trying to figure out how it was supposed to be done. Your photo was a major help! I'm flying with two littles in about a week to Florida and this will be very handy!
